Our Free Market Dahlia Commitment
2024 has brought a lot of changes to the dahlia community. Several well known dahlia hybridizers (breeders) have moved to trademark, patent, require royalties on or otherwise restrict the sale of their cultivars (varieties).
It is our opinion that this is NOT true to the spirit of the dahlia family that we have been so fortunate to be mentored in. There are many ways to pursue profitability as a hybridizer that don't require contracts, paperwork or payments from buyers and future sellers. We truly appreciate and admire the many hybridizers who have put their blooms out into the world and found profitability without placing these restrictions.
Here is our commitment to you:
- Idlewild Blooms will not promote, sell or enter into show any varieties that are trademarked, patented or restricted in any way.
- Idlewild Blooms will not promote, sell or enter into show any varieties that require a royalty, license or paperwork reporting to sell.
- Idlewild Blooms will never seek to trademark or patent any seedlings we hybridize and sell.
- Idlewild Blooms will never seek to license or restrict the use of any seedlings we hybridize and sell.
- Idlewild Blooms will never seek royalties of any kind for the seedlings we hybridize and sell.
We want you to be able to buy with confidence! The moment we hear that a hybridizer *might* restrict their cultivars, we will immediately remove them from our website and social media. Any remaining tubers of those varieties will be given away.
We hope to release our own Idlewild Blooms hybridized cultivars into the world starting in 2026. When that happens, we encourage you to grow, propagate, divide, sell, gift or trade them far and wide. The legacy that comes from this free market approach is worth more to us than any small royalty we might charge.
